Ebook About In this classic novel, James A. Michener brings his grand epic tradition to bear on the four-hundred-year saga of America’s Eastern Shore, from its Native American roots to the modern age. In the early 1600s, young Edmund Steed is desperate to escape religious persecution in England. After joining Captain John Smith on a harrowing journey across the Atlantic, Steed makes a life for himself in the New World, establishing a remarkable dynasty that parallels the emergence of America. Through the extraordinary tale of one man’s dream, Michener tells intertwining stories of family and national heritage, introducing us along the way to Quakers, pirates, planters, slaves, abolitionists, and notorious politicians, all making their way through American history in the common pursuit of freedom. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Chesapeake “Another of James Michener’s great mines of narrative, character and lore.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] marvelous panorama of history seen in the lives of symbolic people of the ages . . . An emotionally and intellectually appealing book.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Michener’s most ambitious work of fiction in theme and scope.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “Magnificently written . . . one of those rare novels that is enthusiastically passed from friend to friend.”—Associated PressBook Chesapeake: A Novel Review :
Once again, from the pen of best-seller novelist James Michener, an all-embracing and comprehensive historical drama...this time the Chesapeake Bay area as the backdrop...from the late 1500’s to the mid-1970’s.In typical Michener fashion of circa a thousand pages, every chapter is wonderfully portrayed with colorful characters and their descendants evolving for four hundred years. From the early days of Indian chieftain Pentaquod up through and including the fictional families of Steeds, Paxmores, Turlocks, Caters and countless others, we delve into generations of lineage and what becomes of the land, customs and personalities over time. The chapters on slave ships and the ensuing outcomes of this horrific practice in history are extremely well represented, shocking and heart-wrenching.Michener was without a doubt a brilliant, gifted and exceptional storyteller in his portrayal of particular places throughout the ages. I'm guessing this must be one of Michener's most critically acclaimed novels. Having read only a couple other of his works to date (The Source and Poland), I don't really have much basis for comparison. I remember that to me, the many mini-stories that comprise The Source varied quite a bit in quality, whereas the stories in Poland were more consistently excellent. In my opinion, Chesapeake overall falls a bit short of Poland but the central third or so focused on the practice of slavery is head and shoulders above anything in Poland. This is a must read book for any with the slightest interest in history.Around 400 years are covered in Chesapeake, with the fictional stories / chapters arranged chronologically and featuring several distinct themes:1) American Indian life in the area and the arrival of European settlers2) Rapid spread of American agriculture and resulting conflicts with Indians3) Plantation lifestyle and the practice of slavery4) The slavery debate and Civil War5) Reconstruction6) The Civil Rights movementsThemes #3 and #4 above are written the best in my opinion. Superb! Violent adventure on the high seas is followed by phenomenal accounts of the lives of slaves and the development of the Underground Railroad.
